Smoke Chamber Repair & Safety Improvement
The smoke chamber is just above the damper. It is shaped like an inverted funnel and its purpose is to direct smoke up and out through the chimney. In many homes, the smoke chamber becomes a hidden fire hazard as the walls of the smoke chamber can be difficult to see. Further, in older construction, the bricks used to build the smoke chamber may have had holes, making them even more prone to catching fire. To reduce this risk, it is advisable to bring the smoke chamber up to current codes and standards.
Until recently, it was necessary to remove the damper and the nearby bricks to access the smoke chamber and hand trowel the area to fill in the holes and cracks. However, there are now newer products on the market, such as ceramic product called Smoktite, that can be sprayed into the smoke chamber to seal the holes and cracks without having to remove the damper and nearby bricks. Smoktite gives the smoke chamber a smooth insulated coat that is safe to use up to 3000 degrees Fahrenheit. Further, it is impervious to water, acids, and vapors. This update makes your smoke chamber much safer and able to endure for decades.
